Nine members of the SUNY Geneseo crew team are safe after their rowing shell capsized in Conesus Lake. It happened near Eagle Point which is off West Lake Road in Geneseo just before 7 a.m.
News10NBC is told the team was practicing when the water conditions began to worsen. The coach of the crew team ordered all the shells back to the shore but the nine-person shell had taken on water. Doing what they were trained to do, the crew members entered the water and the boat overturned. The coach then started ferrying rowers three at a time back to shore in a motor boat.
Undersheriff Jim Szczesniak said the coordinated response really helped keep the situation from turning much worse. “Fire department and local residents did a wonderful job of making sure that a potential tragedy ended up with some cold rowers."
Emergency crews helped bring the shell back to shore and then get it on land.
