It was a chilly start to the day on Sunday, but it was still a great day for a walk, especially to help out a good cause.

The 12th Annual Rochester River Walk/Run 5K was held at Genesee Valley Park Sunday morning.

Participants included more than 50 transplant recipients and almost 100 supporters and surgeons.

Douglas Hemingway took part in the event. Five years ago from Sunday, he received a heart transplant that saved his life.

He told News10NBC about the need for organ donors.

“Being a heart transplant patient, I know there are about 2,500 every year in the U.S., but there are 3,600 people waiting for a transplant,” Hemingway said. “One person can effect the lives of 10 to 15 other people with an organ donation.”
