A program to keep books in the hands of city school kids got a major boost Tuesday.

The Center for Youth announced today that its summer reading program will be able to continue because of a large donation from M&T bank as well as an anonymous donor.

The program sends five books to city school students to keep their reading skills sharp over the summer months.

It's an initiative that city Councilwoman Elaine Spaull says has a long-term impact on the kids. “We have a good correlation between reading at grade level at the end of third grade with high school graduation, so for us,  this is a very targeted, very research-based determination to get all the books in the hands of our kids over the summer."

The "Roc Read" summer program currently serves students at 13 schools.

Councilwoman Spaull says the city hopes to expand that program to all the elementary schools across the district.
