The deadly bombings in Boston changed the way many people look at large public events in Rochester. With one of summer's most popular events, the Rochester Lilac Festival, just around the corner, News10NBC wanted to know how that national event would impact security locally.

The festival organizers say they work hand-in-hand with the Rochester Police Department and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, but that's not all.

Jeff Springut, producer of 2013 Rochester Lilac Festival, said, “We've got a number of internal security people who are really working 24/7 at the site just to keep an eye on things and making sure everyone is doing what they are expected to be and have some fun for the whole family.”

Organizers say they do not believe there is any threat to the Lilac Festival, but this year, as always, they will make sure everyone is as safe as possible. There will also be medical staff at the festival incase of an emergency or if anyone is need of medical treatment.

News10NBC spoke with the Rochester Police Department about the festival.

Sergeant Justin Collins, Rochester Police Department, said, “Use your gut instinct if you see someone or a package that seems suspicious, don't hesitate you need to call 911. The Rochester Police Department will have special event detail. There will also be officers on foot and officers on bicycle. There will be officers doing pedestrian crossings. Also, officers roving throughout the park to maintain the security of the people at the festival.”

News10NBC also asked if anything has changed when it comes to what you can and can not bring to the festival. We found out you can still bring small bags and purses and that food is still not allowed.
