Monroe County officials say it's important to be prepared for a large scale disaster, in case one is to happen here.
On Wednesday, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks and fire and EMS representatives unveiled the new Monroe County Special Operations Unit. It's designed to provide first responders with state of the art capability to manage major disasters, emergencies and crisis situations.
Sam DeRosa, Monroe County Fire Coordinator, said, "The types of responses by fire, EMS and law enforcement has dramatically changed over the past years, none of us here today would have thought we would be doing some of the things we're now expected to do routinely as a team.
The Special Operations Unit includes equipment that can help first responders with rescues on water, ice, confined spaces and hazardous material rescues.
