Police in LeRoy are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a woman. Police say he used a knife during the crime which happened while the victim was sleeping in her home at 1:30a.m. Thursday.
Police are calling it a home invasion that happened on Gilbert Street in the village of LeRoy. The man left the home and a search for him went cold, even with the help of the Monroe County Sheriff's K-9 Unit.
Police in LeRoy won't say how old the victim is or whether there was anyone else in the apartment at the time she was attacked. But what they do want people to know is who they're looking for.
Police describe him as a black man, 20 to 30-years-old, thin build with a shaved head or very short hair.
LeRoy Police say this appears to have been a random attack in an apartment house on Gilbert Street. There's no indication the victim knew her attacker. Police say the sheriff's canine dog had the scene, but then lost it and a search that spanned several blocks was called off before dawn.
Christopher Hayward, LeRoy Police Chief, said, “We're still unclear whether he came in through an open window or a door. The victim was sleeping in the apartment and was awakened by the suspect. He was holding a knife to the face and neck area and actually caused several lacerations to the victim's chin and neck area. The sexual assault occurred and the suspect then left the apartment.”
Penny Hogan said, “I'm kind of shaking. I am, I'm really nervous. I knew better to lock my doors. I'm really nervous.”
Some neighbors say they don't lock their doors at night.
Corrinne said, “I live alone and it could have been me. And I don't lock my doors. Now I am. From now on, I am locking my doors.”
Besides making sure your doors and windows are locked at night, the chief says be vigilant. Report anything suspicious, especially late at night.
