They usually fight with each other over who can lure in the most customers but these days, the nation's four largest cell phone companies are teaming up to try to keep their customers alive and well by launching a campaign against texting and driving.
The ad campaign is unusual in two respects. It unites firms who are usually bitter rivals. And it also represents companies waging a campaign warning against dangers posed by their own products.
For a time, cellphone companies fought against laws barring cellphone use while driving. But now the big four -- AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile -- are starting to tell customers they'd be wise to keep their attention on the road, rather than on their phones.
