Thanks to an I-Team10 investigation there are thousands of dollars going to organizations and individuals in our community. A couple of weeks ago we told you about towns' and school districts' money just waiting for them in a state bank account.
After that report, the state's phones starting ringing.
The aren't earth shattering numbers but as one town supervisor told me -- it's more money the town has now than before. Since our investigation, the state Office of Unclaimed Funds got 163 inquiries from our area that returned $24,471 to the people and municipalities they belonged to.
Our original investigation focused on the towns and school districts -- some of the entities that you pay taxes too -- that had thousands of dollars owed to them just sitting in a state bank account. We showed you how the Greece Central School District got back $1,500, money it said it could use to fund school field trips for students.
And we took you inside the Canandaigua Town Supervisors' office when he was on the phone with the Office of Unclaimed Funds learning that the town was owed $2,000.
Most people think it's just individuals that are owed unclaimed funds. In an interview the I-Team did with the state comptroller over Skype, Thomas DiNapoli said there's money there for the entities that rely on your tax money.
"It is important that we try to remind our municipal officials, our school officials that they may have unclaimed fund accounts and that they should get it back and help their own budgets and really provide some relief for taxpayers," DiNapoli said.
The state comptroller's office says there is $62 million owed to people, governments and not-for-profits in Monroe County alone.
