Rochester Police have arrested a man who punched a police officer in the face while the officer was responding for a mental hygiene situation and fire.

Police were called to Flower Street around 3:30a.m. Friday for a report of a suicidal man. When they arrived, they found flames coming from a second floor window of the house.

Three adults and a baby were inside at the time. Some of the victims climbed on the roof to escape the fire and several people also assisted the residents.

Once all the residents were out of the home, police say the officers attempted to detain the suspect,  22-year-old Jerry Fields, when he punched one of the officers in the face and struggled with another officer.

The officers were treated and released from the hospital.

Fields has been arrested and charged with arson and assault.
