Rochester man pleads guilty to vehicular manslaughter in death of 88-year-old mother

The Rochester man, who was charged in a deadly crash that killed his 88-year-old mother, has pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter.

Edward Smith was charged with vehicular manslaughter. Smith pleaded guilty to being high on cocaine when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree on South Avenue on March 5, 2012.

Smith was taking his 88-year-old mother, Elizabeth Washington, to the hospital to visit his dying father. She was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at Strong Memorial Hospital. Smith's father died about a half hour after the crash.

Smith will appear in court on July 24 and will be sentenced on August 28. As a condition of the plea, Smith will serve two to four years in state prison.
