Authorities say a 55-year-old Canadian man who was pulled out of a western New York pond while rescuing a dog has died after being hospitalized.

State police tell local media outlets that Earl Gallant of Alberta died last Saturday morning at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa.

Troopers say Gallant was hospitalized after he was pulled out of a pond last Wednesday at Campers Haven campground in the Steuben County town of Bath, 60 miles south of Rochester.

Police say after he helped rescue the dog from the pond, Gallant went under the water. Troopers say he was found about 50 feet from shore in 12 feet of water after being submerged for 13 minutes.
