The first annual "Light the Knight" 5K run and walk was held Saturday night in LeRoy to honor the victims of last month's deadly crash at an intersection in Wheatland.
The event benefits the families of the Cal-Mum 5, the young residents of Caledonia-Mumford involved in the accident at the corner of Riga-Mumford Road and North Road back in July.
The 5K took place at LeRoy High School and Hartwood Park on the illuminated cross country course. Besides the run there were a variety of activities, including food and live music.
Organizers talked about the importance of an event like this for the community.
"It was neat to see families walking together. I'm a father. I have four children and I just can't imagine how I would have felt being put in those families' shoes, and that's what you saw happening here. Tomorrow is never a guarantee, and I think you have to live for the moment, and I think you saw families going out, realizing it could have just as easily been them,” said race coordinator Pat Privatera.
Taylor Binnert, Christopher Peterson and Emily Peterson all died as a result of the crash. Michaela Murphy and Joanne Kruchten continue to recover.
Just this past week a four-way stop was added to the intersection where the crash happened in an effort to make the area safer.
