A Greece computer repair shop manager says three people came into the shop stole thousands of dollars worth of electronics, all right in front of their security cameras.
Police released the surveillance video from the robbery over the weekend. On Monday, one person has been charged. Investigators say 35-year-old John Boudreau is charged with grand larceny. Police say he and another man stole electronics worth $1,900 from the “Fix My PC” store in Greece.
The owner of “Fix My PC” says three people came into his shop Saturday. The owner says they took turns distracting the employee at the front desk, while the other two took items off a nearby shelf.
Retails experts say shoplifting costs businesses around the country $35 billion a year. Retail experts say while the traditional “five-finger” discount style of shoplifting is still a problem, now they often see groups coming in and working together in an organized, planned way to steal merchandise.
Ted Potrikus, Executive Vice President and Director of Government Relations, Retail Council of New York State, said, “Usually, it is the over-the-counter medications, or items that are small, because they can conceal those easily and they have a lot of value on the black market. They will go in and steal these things box loads at a time. They will steal them right out of the store and they have varied ways of doing it. And once they do that, it's out the door and the retailer has taken the lose and the impact on the bottom line for the merchant is significant.”
The trend is costing you more, that's because now stores have to raise the prices of goods to cover the cost of security.
Potrikus said, “Ten, 15 years ago stores would, obviously, have a security presence, but now most big retailers they have entire departments dedicated entirely to store security. So you've got personnel, technology, travel expenses, you've got time. All to track these organize gangs, all to keep the merchandise safe.”
Retail experts also say you will see prices increase because of security costs even more with smaller businesses because they have a smaller budget to work with. Greece Police are still looking for the other man, the one with the white shirt in the video. If you know him, or have any information, you are asked to call 911.
