Back to school is right around the corner and parents are busying making sure their kids are ready for the classroom.
Many parents have taken their children to get pencils and notebooks, but what about an exam? It's more important than you may think. One in every 10 kids have an undiagnosed eye issue that impacts their ability to learn. Vision plays a role in everything they do in the normal classroom, reading the board or doing assignments at their desk and it can impact a child's attitude about school.
Dr. Benjamin Hammond, URMC Pediatric Ophthalmologist, said, "I have a number of kids who are having a hard time seeing, they become very frustrating. They are being compared to kids who don't have a problem, and it becomes very frustrating for them. So it is not uncommon for them to have behavioral problem whether it is a lack of attention of acting out because it is frustrating when you can't see well."
Doctors say it's never too young to get an eye exam and you should be making sure that at the very least, your child has a basic eye test at their yearly physical.
