Doctors say predicting serious heart attacks could be as simple as one blood test.

It has to do with biomarkers found in your DNA, clues that show a red flag when doctors are testing for diseases.

Researchers looked at blood samples from more than 3,000 people with heart disease. Those who had three abnormal biomarkers had nearly five times the risk of a heart attack within two years. Patients with just one marker are at a much smaller risk.

Doctors say knowing risk levels can help decide who gets the most aggressive treatments -- things like surgery or medications and it could help motivate people to stick to healthy living plans
