Officials say a correctional officer was seriously injured Wednesday evening after being attacked by an inmate at Attica Correctional Facility.
The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association tells News10NBC that the attack happened while prisoners were receiving medications at about 5 p.m. Wednesday. Officials say the officer was monitoring the inmates as they received their medication when one inmate refused. The officer approached the inmate and that's when officials say the he was attacked.
According to NYSCOPBA Western Region Vice President Mike Dildine, Spears punched the officer in the face, resulting in a broken jaw and two broken eye sockets. Officials say the guard was airlifted to Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight where he is currently being treated.
Two other officers were also injured attempting to restrain the inmate. One of those officers was bitten and the other injured his right knee. Both were taken to United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia for treatment.
Officials say the attack is under investigation and charges are pending at this time.
