Pushing the smartphone industry to do better job to protect you. Mayor Richards and Police Chief James Sheppard are among more than a dozen officials across the state, joining in the effort to combat "apple picking", that's the theft of devices like smartphones and tablets.
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman started the initiative called "Secure our Smartphones" or SOS. He says the frequency of these thefts is staggering.
Officials say, in Rochester, in the first six months of the year, three out of four robberies involved the theft of a cell phone. Consumer Reports say that $1.6 million Americans were victimized by smartphone thieves in 2012.
