Whether you pick up a hammer, or a soup ladle, volunteering could be good for your health.
A large review of studies on the effects of volunteering found people who spend time giving back to the community had a lower risk of death. They were also less likely to be depressed and reported more satisfaction with life.
More studies are needed to confirm these results and researchers aren't sure of the cause behind this benefit.
Researchers say the physical benefits from volunteering could be related to the fact that these people get out of the house more often. The mental health benefits could stem from the social interaction linked to volunteering.
