Sheriff's deputies have charged the driver of a car they say hit a speed limit sign and mailboxes before slamming into a tree on East Street, near Thornell Road, in Pittsford. It happened around 2:30 a.m.
According to the sheriff's office, The driver, 20-year-old Michael Weber Junior, has been charged with Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree and Reckless Driving. Weber was also issued several traffic citations. He was ordered held in lieu of $75, 000 cash bail or $100, 000 bond. He is listed in satisfactory condition. Deputies say it appeared Weber was under the influence.
The passenger in the car, 20-year-old Joel Ajavon, was killed by the impact. We spoke with residents who woke up to the crash. Nate Corney said, "I heard it. We were sleeping right up in our bed and then heard a bang and a flash and I guess that's when the guy was driving by and took out two mailboxes next door. Somehow missed our mailbox and two trees there but made it off the road somewhere down there."
Down there, as in down the street where deputies say the car slammed into that tree on the passenger side where Ajavon was sitting. He was killed on impact.
We are told Ajavon was set to resume classes at MCC next week. He was in the electrical engineering technology program.
Deputies are still investigating the crash.
