Thousands of cars pass through it on a daily basis. Wednesday night the New York State Department of Transportation revealed a proposal to ease traffic issues in the area of Route 390, Interstate 490 and Lyell Avenue in Gates.
People who live in or commute through there had the chance to comment at the Gates Town Hall Wednesday night. The DOT says this area has been on its radar for several years and it has worked with the public to design this proposal.
Randy Kemp is part of a citizen group working with the DOT. Here's what he had to say on the proposal.
“I've seen enough accidents in there. Luckily, knock on wood, haven't been involved in one in there. But it needs to be something that's improved for everybody in the area and everybody who goes through there,” said Kemp.
The project still needs approval and federal money to be secured. The DOT says it would begin the project by replacing the Lyell Avenue bridge over Route 390.
The DOT will take comments through September 20.
Highlights of the project design proposed under this alternative include:
•Replacing the Lyell Avenue Bridge over Route 390, the Buffalo Road bridge over I-390, and the Route 390 bridges over Trolley Boulevard;
•Reducing congestion, improving operation and safety at the weaving section on Route 390 southbound between Lyell Avenue and the I-490 exit ramps by providing a major fork north of Lyell Avenue that will divert Route 390 southbound through-traffic to a new two-lane flyover roadway above the 390/490 interchange;
•Eliminating the existing northbound weaving maneuvers on Route 390 between the merging exit ramp from I-490 westbound and the Lyell Avenue exit ramp. This is accomplished by introducing a new exit ramp and bridge that provides a direct connection for Route 390 northbound traffic destined for Lyell Avenue. A dedicated northbound through-lane and an extended auxiliary lane for I-490 westbound traffic destined for Route 390 northbound would also be provided;
•Reducing traffic congestion and related accidents by providing continuous auxiliary lanes on Route 390 between Lyell Avenue and Lexington Avenue interchanges in both directions, as well as on I-390 southbound between the I-490 eastbound ramp merge and the Chili avenue exit ramp;
•Improving traffic operation, intersection geometry and safety at the I-490 WB/Route 390 northbound exit ramp intersection with Lyell Avenue by realigning the ramp opposite Lee Road, installing turn lanes and replacing the traffic signal system.
•Improving operation and safety at the I-390 northbound exit ramp to I-490 westbound by converting the left-hand travel lane approaching the ramp to an exit only lane, maintaining two northbound through travel lanes, and widening the ramp lane and shoulders.
•Installing 6 foot wide bike lanes and sidewalks for pedestrian along Lyell Avenue within the project limits.
•Reducing levels of highway noise reaching residential areas adjacent to the expressway interchange area through the construction of noise barriers.
