Two people, including a Greece man, died this weekend at a popular music festival in New York City.
Officials say Jeffrey Russ, 23, died early Saturday morning after attending the Electric Zoo Festival on Randall's Island in New York City. Officials say a definitive cause of death has not yet been determined, but they believe the cause may be drug related.
News10NBC spoke with Russ' family members, but they declined an interview. However, News10NBC has learned Russ was not in New York City to go to the concert.
We do have pictures and a video of Jeff Russ, but we are respecting the family's wishes at this time and are not going to share the images.
Family members did share a little bit about him. His uncle Scott Holdaway said he "lit up the room with his personality."
Family members say Russ was an avid sports fan. He loved the Buffalo Bills. He graduated in 2012 from Syracuse with a degree in information technology. Before that he graduated from Greece Athena High School.
News10NBC also learned he was only supposed to go to New York City for the Syracuse vs. Penn State football game. He was in city with 22 others, mostly fraternity brothers.
Russ' family initially found out about his death from friends. They say the Electric Zoo Festival was not in the plans.
This was the fifth year the festival was was held over the Labor Day Weekend. Last year, more than 100,000 people attended. The festival features more than 125 electronic music acts on five stages this year, including Avicii, David Guetta and Krewella.
The organizers stopped selling tickets after the deaths. They left a statement on their website that read, “The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today.”
News10NBC has been trying to reach some of Russ' friends via Facebook and Twitter. And is hoping to get in contact with some of them by the end of the day.
