While many students are getting ready for a new school year, people in the Jewish community are getting ready for a new year.
At the University of Rochester, the university's Jewish community came together to celebrate both of those things Monday. Students, staff and community members came out for the grand opening of the new Chabad House Jewish Student Center. The center will provide a "home away from home" for Jewish students at the UR.
Leaders say today was a day of beginnings for many reasons.
Rabbi Asher Yaras, University of Rochester, said, "This is the year that is the earliest in over 100 years actually that Rosh Hashanah, the first day of the Jewish year will fall on September 4 at night. So it's a perfect week for us to dedicate a new building, the beginning of a school year, the beginning of the Jewish year with the spirit, and the writing of a new Torah."
The grand opening was commemorated with the writing of the final letters on a new Torah, an ancient religious scroll. This was the first Torah dedicated at the University of Rochester.
