Another boost for Mayor Richards' re-election bid. The mayor was endorsed by Lt. Governor and former Rochester Mayor Bob Duffy.
Duffy gave his endorsement Wednesday, citing the mayor's work to continue moving Rochester forward and improve the quality of life in the city. Lt. Governor Duffy also pointed out Richards' commitment to major projects in Rochester, such as the Midtown Rising Project that he spearheaded while Duffy was still mayor of the city.
Lt. Governor Bob Duffy said, "We are at the point in time where you need somebody who has a steady hand and the background Tom has in business and his relationships is very helpful. He has inspired confidence, he's inspired a very steady hand in leading the city, he's what the city needs at this time."
Mayor Richards will face off against current City Council President Lovely Warren next Tuesday in a democratic primary.
Warren released a statement saying, " Lieutenant Governor Bob Duffy's endorsement of Tom Richards this afternoon does not come as a surprise, and falls more in the category of political theater than actual news. As early as January, Duffy said I should wait my turn to run for Mayor; and if I was not willing to do so, he would support Tom. Since that time, he has appeared in both Tom's commercials so his support of Tom has been well known for some time now. As I have said all along, this campaign is not about who can rack up the most endorsements or who is supported by the special interests and power brokers. This campaign is about one thing and one thing only, doing what is best and right for all the people of Rochester. The only endorsement I care about, is that of the voters. That said, I have deep respect for Duffy, and I regret that he, like so many others who are fortunate enough to be able to vote with their feet, has sold his home on Croyden Road in the Browncroft neighborhood to move to Keuka Lake. We always worked extremely well together and I expect we will continue to do so. "
