A program aimed to help people travel through airport security faster, is coming to Rochester. It's called the TSA PreCheck.

The program has been in use since 2011. All you have to do is apply and pass a background check, and you can get through airport security faster.

Right now the TSA PreCheck system is used at 40 airports around the country. Now with this expansion it will be used at about 100, with the Rochester International Airport will be once of them.

Airport Director, Mike Giradino, thinks this will be great for the airport.

“We are excited about it, and we are very hopeful that it will be an improvement to the check point area.”

The PreCheck screening allows for a traveler to apply, get a background check, and once they are approved, a bar code will be encoded on the travelers boarding pass sending them to a special line where they can leave their shoes, light outerwear and belt on. Also travelers don't have to unpack their laptops or their liquids.

This all happens in a express lane at the airport's security check point. The system has been used in airports around the country, and now is expanding to include the Rochester International Airport.

“For the business traveler it is going to be a great  improvement. Mornings are the toughest, and most business travelers go out before 6 a.m., and we have 17 flights before 8:30 in the morning. So the check point is very busy in the morning, so you can imagine the business traveler would enjoy this convenience the most,” said Giradino.

The cost of the PreCheck application is $85, and once you pass the screening it will last you 5 years.

Frequent business traveler, Mary McKenna says, “I think $85 is a great deal, and if I were using lots of different airlines, I would absolutely do it.”

News 10NBC spoke to fliers who know of people who have used this system at other airports, and say it is very convenient.

Some people said they are worried this would decrease security, because it is one less security check at the actual airport, but the airport director here says it is a system that can be trusted.

Airport officials say we will be getting PreCheck in Rochester, sometime in September.
