A solemn day for many people in western New York. Friday marks 42 years since New York State Police retook Attica prison after riots broke out there.
When it was over, 32 inmates and 11 guards died. The uprising started four days earlier when prisoners fed up with living conditions, seized control of the correctional facility in Wyoming County.
To regain control, state police used tear gas and snipers who began to fire in the prison yard. The state agreed in 2000 to pay $12 million to the families of inmates. Another $12 million went to families of the guards in 2004.
