Three days from now, the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival gets underway. It's going to be 10 days of all sorts of art, music, theater, dance. For adults and children too. There will also be a lot of home-grown talent. Two musicians, who will perform, are brothers from Batavia. They grew up listening to Van Halen, but what they do now is a long way from rock and roll.
The Irrera Brothers' talents have taken them all over the world. John is a violinist and older brother, Joseph, is a pianist. Just this past May, they were in Italy. Last February, it was Carnegie Hall. Last summer, they played in Costa Rica as a duo. Joseph says it keeps them busy.
Joseph Irrera said, “It's very exciting to travel that much and perform and see different parts of the world.”
The Irrera Brothers keep a busy schedule. In addition to performing, the brothers are also completing their doctorates at the Eastman School of Music and they are on the faculty of the Eastman Community Music School, the same place they got their own start years ago, each at the age of 5.
Growing up in Batavia, they listened to the music their parents played, which was Van Halen and Aerosmith. So how did they get from rock and roll to classical music?
Joseph said, " We really don't know where that came from, but as far as music being in our lives, it always was. It was just a different, different type."
Yes, they were more into Beethoven and Prokofiev, classical music. Now the brother have just signed with a New York City management company. It will mean more travel for this duo, more five to eight hour practice sessions, more time "together." That's a lot of family time. We wondered how well they handle that.
John said, "Sure, yeah, we're brothers, we're brothers. We get fiery sometimes, but you know it's the sibling dynamic."
Joseph adds, "I think, in a way, it helps the music actually because it is pure honesty."
