New information on a theater brawl involving hundreds of people. News10NBC has learned a new security plan is being created for the Regal Culver Ridge Theater in Irondequoit. Police are teaming up with town officials and theater management to make sure this never happens again.
We found out about several possible changes, all of them geared toward making movie goers feel safer and to put parents at ease when dropping off their teens to the movies.
Irondequoit Town Supervisor Mary Joyce D'Aurizio says security will be “considerably tougher” at the theater. However, the biggest chance will be improving communication between town officials and the theater. They want theater management to notify the town when a big movie will premiere, especially one that attracts teens.
Another change is, instead of putting 400 to 500 people in a large theater, town officials are suggesting they divide the crowd into two smaller theater rooms, especially on a premiere night.
Town officials want the theater to provide more of a security presence. The big brawl last Friday started inside the movie theater during a showing of “Insidious: Chapter Two”.
Irondequoit Police say they got a tip from social media about a possible fight, so they did have officers present. They did not anticipate it would happen inside the theater. Town officials are now using the incident as a learning tool.
Lindsey Grasis said, “Definitely better. I'm glad I know about it now and I'm glad they are stepping up their security for sure.”
Blanca Irizarry said, “I don't think I would be able to come to this theater. I think I would go to a safer one where I think there would be more security. If there are more changes to security, I'll probably be able to come back. Right now, until it is safe to go in there, no.”
None of the changes have been implemented yet. Town officials will meet with Irondequoit Police and theater management to discuss the security plan Thursday morning. News10NBC put in another call to the Regal Theater in Irondequoit. They declined to comment. We also called the Regal national headquarters. We want to know if there will be changes to all Regal theaters in the area. We are hoping to hear back from them soon.
