A new study confirms colonoscopy screening is the most effective method of detecting all types of colon cancer.
Harvard researchers found regular colonoscopies could prevent 40-percent of colorectal cancers. They recommend people with an average risk for the disease be screened every 10 years with shorter intervals for those with benign tumors or a family history of colorectal cancer. That’s because patients in the study who had a clean colonoscopy had a much lower risk of colorectal cancer up to 15 years after the procedure.
While the less invasive sigmoidoscopy was linked to a reduced risk of cancer in the lower part of the colon, it didn't effectively detect cancers in the upper colon.
