A major milestone for the Medley Centre redevelopment project. Irondequoit Town Supervisor Mary Joyce D'Aurizio tells News10NBC that under her direction, Scott Congel, the developer of Medley Centre, has secured three demolition permits from the town hall.
She tells News10NBC that demolition will begin on October 3 to tear down the building at 1665 East Ridge Road.
Congel has received millions of dollars in tax breaks from the town, Monroe County and the East Irondequoit School District. In return, he's promised to turn the nearly empty mall into a multi- million dollar mixed use complex. Congel is up to date on his payments in lieu of taxes, but is facing millions of dollars in penalties early next year for not meeting project investment goals.
D'Aurizio says this represents the first major milestone in Medley Centre's redevelopment. She says she is pleased that Irondequoit will now see "shovels in the ground" at Medley Centre for the first time.
