It's a place where children in our community play, but Wednesday night, it was turned into a crime scene after a teenager was viciously assaulted.
It happened at Barnard Park in Greece. Police say a 18-year-old teen was attacked on the playground around 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night. The park is on Maiden Lane right next to a Greece Police substation, a fire station and an elementary school.
Late Thursday afternoon, police say they have made an arrest in this attack. Eighteen-year-old Jacob Cary assaulted the 18-year-old victim. Cary was charged with first degree assault. He remains in police custody Thursday night.
News10NBC wanted to know if police are going to do anything different to make sure this doesn't happen again and to keep the park safe for everyone.
Greece Police Captain Patrick Phelan said, “It's out of the ordinary for this area. It's a very safe park. It's used pretty regularly and it's probably an isolated incident and I wouldn't be concerned about the public safety.”
Even though police say residents should not be concerned, many say they are because of the extent of the injuries.
The park was closed all night. Police say the teen was found bloody and beaten by a person walking by who immediately called 911. The teen was taken to the hospital. He suffered injuries to the head and other minor injuries to his body. He regained consciousness Thursday morning and was cooperating with the investigation.
Barnard Park is a place where many people walk their dog, play sports and bring their kids to play. That's why local residents are so shocked. Many said they can't help but worry about what may happen in the future.
Kellie Gleason said, “It actually makes me feel unsafe. It makes me feel like you know, what happens if I come over? Is something like that going to happen to me?”
Rick Pressley said, “I'm very concerned about it. Again, your safety is always paramount. I just have to watch who is around more.”
Police believe a weapon may have been used in the attack and they are still looking into what may have caused Cary to assault the victim. There's no word on when the victim is expected to be released from the hospital.
