October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it is also fire prevention month. News10NBC wants to introduce you to a woman who combines both those causes into one.
Meet Karie O'Gara. She's a firefighter in Greece and she's also a five-year survivor of breast cancer. O'Gara spends much of the month of October, talking to young children about fire safety. But she wears a special pink fire suit to teach those children about breast cancer as well.
O'Gara said, “I know it touches a lot of the children, so it's a good double message. I hope it opens up a conversation at home. I want mothers to be out there and aware. I was diagnosed at 34, so I'm hoping maybe a child will come home and say, 'mommy, have you gone to the doctor recently?'”
That pink suit that Karie is wearing was a gift from her brothers and sisters in th North Greece Fire Department.
