News10NBC has learned there is a police investigation into a local Catholic church. According to the Rochester Police Department, over the past few years, hundreds of thousands of dollars has gone missing from St. Monica's Catholic Church.
The Rochester Police Department says their investigation is in the early stages. But they would confirm they are looking into hundreds of thousands of dollars that are missing from the church. Police say they have piles of paperwork to go through before they will know exactly how much money is missing, or any information like how this happened and who was involved.
St. Monica's Church let their parishioners know about the investigation a few weeks ago.
Mary Grant, parishioner, said, “They are lovely people, it is a very welcoming church, all are welcome at St. Monica's Church. They are very genuine and trustworthy, as a rule, so it doesn't fit. It just doesn't make sense.”
News10NBC will continue to try and find out what procedures the Catholic Diocese has in place to make sure this doesn't happen at your parish and if they are planning to change those procedures in light of the investigation at St. Monica's.
Fr. Raymond H. Fleming, pastor of St. Monica's, shared this statement with parishioners at masses the weekend of August 24 and 25.
"It is with great sadness that I must tell you we have discovered what appears to be a misappropriation of a substantial amount of money from our parish. The matter was referred to the Rochester Police Department for investigation and we are cooperating fully with the authorities. Because the matter does involve an on-going investigation, I am not at liberty to discuss details or answer questions at this point in time. But I will keep you informed. Please pray for a quick resolution to this unfortunate situation."
