They gave their lives serving their community. West Webster firefighters Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were among nine firefighters honored Tuesday at the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
The pair was killed when a gunman opened fire on them after setting his home on Lake Road ablaze last Christmas Eve. Now their names will join those of more than 2,000 other fallen firefighters on the memorial.
Lieutenant Governor Bob Duffy joined other officials and firefighters from across the state for the ceremony Tuesday morning.
Lt. Governor Bob Duffy said,"Last Christmas Eve, those brave firefighters went to fight a fire and faced something they weren't familiar with. Here they go to put a fire out and they're executed, shot at by a deranged gunman. The whole landscape changed because firefighters are trained to go forward and put fires out. It changed the whole thought process, adding on to the dangers these brave men and women face every day."
The ceremony comes just days after they were remembered in a national ceremony.
