Hunger campaign leaders and representatives from AARP met Thursday and presented a plan designed to help the elderly in our area take advantage of food assistance programs.
The AARP says that around 74-percent of eligible seniors in Monroe and Wayne Counties are not getting the financial help they need to pay for food and that barriers to the SNAP Food Stamp program keep the 50 years of age and older population from participating.
AARP is calling on New York State to make it easier and streamline the process seniors go through to apply for SNAP benefits
Christine Deska, AARP, said, "But you know the important thing , and why we are here today, is to let older adults know, that if you are eligible, the funds are there for you. You're not taking funds away from working families with children. It's a federal benefit, it's there for you."
