It was an crime that shocked the nation.
Two and a half years ago a gunman opened fire on a crowd in a store parking lot in Arizona, severely wounding former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
Saturday, people here in Rochester got a chance to hear about Giffords' ordeal and witness her miraculous recovery. The former Congresswoman and her husband, Mark Kelly, were the guest speakers at RIT's "Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend."
They came as part of the annual "Horton Distinguished Speakers" series.
In their speech, entitled "Endeavor to Succeed", they encouraged the audience to persevere in difficult situation. Giffords said, "I'm still fighting to make the world a better place and you can too. Be passionate, be courageous, be your best."
Giffords and Kelly have been campaigning for expanded background checks at gun shops. Tomorrow she'll get a chance to see how things have changed in New York since new gun laws took effect this year. Giffords will tour a gun show in Saratoga Springs with the State Attorney General, her first since the shooting.
