An Albion man is at Strong Memorial Hospital after he was involved in a head-on crash with an 18-wheel tractor-tanker truck.
The crash happened just after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday in the 5000 block of South Gravel Road in the town of Shelby.
Sheriff's deputies say 24-year-old Stephen G. Thomas III, of Albion, was traveling north on South Gravel Road when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a tractor-tanker, carrying refrigerated liquid oxygen. The collision sent Thomas's car off the road, landing into a residential yard.
Sheriff's deputies say Thomas was trapped in his car for 45 minutes before he was rescued by firefighters. Thomas was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight.
The truck driver was not injured, but was transported to Medina Memorial Hospital as precaution.
The truck & tanker is owned by the Linde Group LLC based in Germany with a local terminal in Buffalo. The tractor sustained heavy damage, but we're told there was no damage to the tank and the 800 to 1,000 gallons of liquid oxygen. Sheriff's deputies say there was minimal spillage of diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid, which was quickly contained by the fire department.
Sheriff's deputies are still investigating what caused the crash.
