You go to a hospital to get better, right? In reality, there are thousands of deaths each year in this country because of infections that patients get while in the hospital.
At Unity Hospital, Armando Nahum, the founder of the SafeCare Organization talked about the serious problem. He says three of his family members became infected in three different hospitals in three different states, all within ten months time. His 27-year-son, Josh, did not survive and he says he doesn't want other families to go through the same thing.
Armando Nahum, patient advocate, said, "In the US, 1.7 million people are infected with HI's which stands for hospital related infections and 99-thousand people die each year. So it's out there. If you take the sum of automobile accidents, breast cancer and AIDS, it does not add up to 99 thousand people a year."
According to Nahum, 40 percent of people who die from hospital related infections could be saved just by hand washing alone. He also says if you or a loved one are hospitalized, make sure you have someone that can advocate for you if you are too sick to do it yourself.
