NY plans to expand Ft. Drum buffer zones

New York officials say they are working with federal and local authorities to expand the buffer zones around Fort Drum in northern New York in an effort to help retain the Army installation they say contributed $1.4 billion to the region's economy last year.
 
The buffers conserve land around the base to avoid interfering with military training activities like helicopter landings.
 
The Cuomo administration says Monday it will provide $500,000 this year, leveraging a $4 million federal commitment for land easements.
 
Since 1999, officials say about 3,500 acres have been put into buffer zones around the installation near Watertown.
 
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the Army installation is critical to both the military and the North Country's economy.
