Senator Chuck Schumer wants to crack down on prescription drug abuse in our community.
On Wednesday, he called on the federal government to allow local pharmacies to host regular drug take-backs.
Senator Schumer outlined his proposal while visiting Faris Pharmacy on Latta Road in Greece. He says drug take-back programs cut back on growing prescription drug addiction and theft in New York State. The Centers for Disease Control says more than three out of four people who abuse prescription painkillers use drugs prescribed to someone else. Drug take-backs will help take those unused pills out of homes where they can be stolen or misused.
Senator Schumer says the next step is a buy-back program, where people will be encouraged to bring in their old prescriptions in exchange for money or gift cards.
