High school football sectional playoffs kick off Friday night. No team is more accustom to raising that trophy in recent memory than Aquinas.
The road has been easy for Aquinas so far. The Little Irish are beating opponents by 20 points a game. The only close game was an early season 3-0 shutout over than number one state ranked Canisius. Aquinas grabbed that title after the victory and enter sectionals as heavy favorites.
Chris Battaglia, Aquinas Head Coach, said, “You never want to be the team to not win it, but every year is a new year and it's not a given your even going to get to the final, so you have to play one week at a time.”
The first challenger is 1-6 Webster Thomas. The Titan prepare for a defense that allows seven points a game and has the ability at any moment to return one for a touchdown.
Donato Clemente, Aquinas safety/running back, said, “A lot of them don't get a chance for touchdowns on offense, so there is a competition on defense as to who can get the most interceptions and touchdowns.”
Emilio Zuniga, Aquinas defensive tackle, said, “We come out get the team off the field and get our offense on the field and battle.”
So the expectations are obvious for Aquinas, anything but an eighth straight sectional title, a disappointment.
Jake Zembiec, Aquinas quarterback, said, “It's always been about a sectional championship and if were talking states that is just a bonus to tack on to that sectional championship.”
