In just two days, your little ghosts and goblins will hit the streets to say trick or treat and police in our area are offering some tips to keep your kids safe.
One of the biggest pieces of advice for parents is to be an escort. Police say it’s important for you to tag along with your children, even young teens, to make sure they're following the rules like not darting out into traffic and making sure your they do not go into a stranger’s home.
Police say parents can still keep a watchful eye on their kids without being right on top of them. Lieutenant Frank Alberti of the Rochester Police Department said, “What we're saying is be near the group as they walk up to the door. Be somewhere nearby where you can keep an eye on your child either at bottom of stairs or right at the sidewalk.”
Some additional tips include making sure kids are familiar with the route they'll be taking, stay in a group and if you see something suspicious, call 911.
