Election Day is exactly one week away and there are more twists in the race for Rochester mayor. This time it has to do with campaigning.
Mailers were recently sent to voters. The issue is democrats say the mailers can be confusing because they support Mayor Tom Richards and one even has a democratic logo on it. The Independence Party put out one of the mailers even though Richards says he is not campaigning. Democrats are backing Lovely Warren for mayor after she beat Richards in the primary last month.
The mailers, which sparked Tuesday's Democratic Party news conference, went out to voters all over. Joe Morelle, the Democratic Committee Chairman says they are confusing. He feels they appeal to democrats and makes it seem like Richards is a democratic candidate. Morelle wants to clear that up.
Joe Morelle, Democrat Committee Chairman, said, There is one democratic candidate for mayor in the city of Rochester. There is one endorsed by the party. There is one who has won, overwhelmingly, a Democratic Primary and that is who our candidate is, our candidate is Lovely Warren.”
Monroe County Democratic Committee Chairman Joe Morelle says some signs could be confusing voters.
Ronald Wilson, city resident, said, “Personally, I am going for Lovely Warren. I know there is another guy, but I don't remember his name and I'm not sure if Richards is running or not.”
Amanda Ciavarri asked, “Who is running for mayor?”
Brian White, city resident, said, “Lovely Warren, the Green Party candidate, Alex White, and that's all I know.”
Ciavarri asked, “Do you think the mayor is running right now?”
White said, “No.”
Ciavarri asked, “Do you think he is running right now, or do you think he has stepped down?”
Hershel Patterson said, “From what I see on the news he is not running, but the Independence Party keeps pushing, they are trying to force him to run. If the guy don't want to run, don't push him.”
The room was filled Tuesday with democrats and city leaders who are throwing their support behind Lovely Warren. But one face was missing. That face was Mayor Tom Richards. News10NBC wanted to know where he was and if he truly is not running, why won't he tell people to not vote for him.
Morelle said, “The mayor said last week,' I endorse Lovely, I've endorsed Lovely'. I know the mayor was traveling to spend sometime with his family, hopefully he is doing that.”
Morelle says mailers like these could cost tens of thousands of dollars. They went out to people all over including residents in Greece who can't even vote in the mayor's race.
The Democratic Committee also called into question how the grassroots group "Turn Out for Tom" is spending its campaign money and who is donating. Chairman Morelle says the group has broken New York State's election law by not making public their list of donors and how they are spending campaign dollars. News10NBC spoke with someone from the group Tuesday afternoon.
Democratic candidate Lovely Warren will face Green Party candidate Alex White at the polls next Tuesday. Mayor Richards' name will be on that ballot, as well.
