New data shows 1 in 10 teens and young adults who were treated in the E.R. for any reason admitted to misusing prescription painkillers or sedatives at least once within the past year.
Those numbers included taking medications to get high, taking more than was prescribed to them, or taking pills prescribed to someone else.
Researchers say because young patients may be seeking these drugs when they come to the emergency room, it could be a good setting to screen for possible abuse and begin early interventions.
