A fight outside of a bar in Brockport left one man dead and another charged with murder.

Police say the fight broke out on Clinton Street around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Brockport Police say the victim is 24-year-old Noel VanDorn of Brockport. News10NBC is told he was stabbed numerous times and later died at the scene.

Police have arrested Thomas Bennett, a 29-year-old Brockport resident. He's charged with second-degree murder.

Police say this is an ongoing investigation. They say it will continue for the next few days as investigators expect even more witnesses to come forward.

Sunday night News10NBC spoke to a family member of the victim over the phone. She says VanDorn graduated from Brockport High School. He was a father of a five-year-old girl.

The family member says VanDorn was temporarily in North Carolina, but came back to Brockport to turn his life around. News10NBC is told he was even supposed to start a new job on Monday.

As far as the relationship between the victim and the suspect, family members say the two knew each other and this was not their first altercation.

Brockport Police say an officer was patrolling the area on Clinton Street when he spotted a crowd. He later learned the two men were involved in a fight involving weapons.

Shortly after, the VanDorn was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brockport Police worked together with the Monroe County Sheriffs' Office collecting evidence and combing through the area. They spoke with several witnesses and through those interviews and the evidence collected.

Police say they were able to charge Bennett with second-degree murder. He was arraigned at a Rochester area hospital and now remains in the Monroe County Jail.

Right now there is no bail amount set. Investigators say the witnesses played a key role in this arrest.

“That's very important. I think people want to do the right thing. They see something that happened that was wrong and their gut tells them to come forward and say what they saw. A lot of people are doing so here,” said Lieutenant Mark Cuzzupoli, Brockport Police Department.

One of the questions News10NBC asked police was could the extra hour of service during the daylight saving transition have contributed to this incident? Police say they would not speculate at this time.

Bennett is expected in court for a preliminary hearing on Friday.
