A police chase that started in Rochester ended near the Irondequoit Bay Bridge with one person taken into custody early this morning.

Rochester Police tell News10NBC officers tried to stop a vehicle on Lake Avenue near Route 104 around 4 a.m. Investigators say the vehicle was wanted in connection with snatch and grab robberies in Irondequoit and in Rochester.

Officers say 24-year-old Christopher Denike failed to pull over and a short pursuit began. According to police, the chase ended on the westbound side of the bridge where Denike got out of his car and jumped over the bridge.

Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard said, “I don't know if you've been on the Bay Bridge but it's a significant drop. We're surprised that there were no serious injuries as a result. It's a good Thing. Obviously he'll be taken care of medically and then he will be held accountable for the charges that he's facing.”

Armed police officers were on a boat in the water working to rescue him. When Denike was brought to shore by officers, he was naked and handcuffed. He was taken to by ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say Denike may be charged with robbery or grand larceny.
