A 26-year-old inmate at Seneca County Correctional Facility has been arrested for hitting a correction officer in the head.

Adam Jeffrey Briggs of Seneca Falls is charged with second-degree assault, a felony.

Sheriff’s deputies say on October 23, Briggs became disruptive and was ordered back to his cell in an effort to maintain security in the jail unit. According to investigators, Briggs failed to follow multiple verbal commands and had to be escorted back to his cell. Deputies say correction officers tried to walk Briggs to his cell at which point Briggs broke away and hit an officer in the head with a closed fist. Deputies say Briggs’ action caused the officer to hit the doorway of the cell, resulting in injuries to his head. Investigators say the officer suffered severe pain, bleeding and discomfort.

Briggs is being held in the Seneca County Correctional Facility to await further court action on a separate case.
