New York's Senate Republicans aren't wavering in their opposition to using taxpayer money to fund statewide election campaigns even after a commission probing corruption said that step would limit the power of money in politics.

Meanwhile, Democrats and good-government advocates continue to strongly support the proposal to create a voluntary matching fund for statewide candidates as well as greater disclosure and restrictions on how the money is spent.

The Moreland Commission report includes several other measures that could be negotiated between Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature.

Senate Republican spokesman Scott Reif says Tuesday public funding of campaigns would divert resources that could be used to bolster schools and cut taxes.
