The New York state police say two inmates who died in custody at the Attica Correctional Facility likely overdosed on drugs.
The males, ages 25 and 51, were found in separate cells on Thursday. Police said Saturday they believe preliminarily the men died from overdoses, but toxicology results are pending. The investigation continues.
A third inmate was also taken to the hospital on Thursday, but for an unrelated medical condition.
Attica is a maximum security prison in western New York that can house up to about 2,200 inmates. It was the site of the nation's deadliest prison riot in 1971. Thirty-two inmates and 11 civilian employees died during the five-day siege, including 10 hostages and 29 inmates who died when state troopers stormed the prison's D Yard.
