Officials say companies in New York are getting almost $9 million as part of $260 million national program to expand broadband Internet access to rural areas.

The Federal Communications Commission says the money will go to communications carriers FairPoint, Frontier Communications, and Windstream.

It will provide service to 16,000 homes and businesses in areas considered unlikely to see expansion of broadband without the funding.
