Disappointment in the field of AIDS research today as two patients thought to have been in remission now have detectable levels of HIV once again.
Doctors at Boston’s Brigham and Women's Hospital have been treating the two men. This past July, they were no longer able to detect the virus in two patients who had a bone marrow transplant to treat cancer.
Doctors had hoped the new blood cells from the new bone marrow would find and kill the old ones infected with HIV.
Unfortunately, their HIV has now returned.
